Multi-talented designer and industry veteran Sarah Capps named Marketing and Design Coordinator

Graphic designer, 3D modeler, and industry marketing veteran Sarah Capps joined the Blair Construction team as marketing and design coordinator in November 2023.

Capps fills a new position at Blair where she will oversee a range of responsibilities, including marketing-specific duties such as maintenance of Blair-Construction.com to project-oriented responsibilities like 3D modeling and estimating. She will also design Blair’s printed materials and manage the company’s social media platforms.

“Like many employees here, I wear several hats,” said Capps, who has spent nearly two decades in the landscape and architecture industries.

A 2005 graduate of Virginia Tech, Capps earned her bachelor’s degree in urbanization, policy, and planning. She went on to receive a master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Maryland and a master’s in sustainable development and design from VCU. She is an award-winning designer who, while serving as landscape and urban designer at The Green Road in Bethesda, Md., earned one of only six national Nature Sacred Awards in 2013.

“I was initially attracted to the culture at Blair, and I have great respect for the president, Tim Clark,” Capps said. “Tim has a unique approach to finding and hiring the right employees. I appreciate his patience and desire to match people with the right company and the right position.”

Capps’ skill set and experience is diverse, spanning traditional marketing duties such as graphic design, website maintenance, and social media, as well as 3D architectural modeling, engineering, and landscape architecture.

“Since I started, I’ve been very impressed with the kindness and overall human aspect of the employees and the office,” Capps added. “Employees aim to help one another and are cross-trained in a number of areas. When you need something, there’s always someone to help. The level of teamwork and genuine desire to succeed is unmatched in my work experiences to date. It doesn’t hurt that there are lots of other Virginia Tech grads here. Go, Hokies!”

Capps’ career has included stops at several engineering and architecture firms, notably Balzer and Associates in Richmond and Architectural Partners in Lynchburg. Her recent career highlights include team contributions in design work for the new quad at Sweet Briar College and the new master plan for Grymes Memorial School in Orange, Va. She has also done freelance work in rendering and landscape design for nearly a decade.

“Sarah is a true renaissance woman with a wealth of talents that she weaves together seamlessly,” said Blair Construction President Tim Clark. “She has a unique combination of creativity, design skill and expertise, and industry knowledge, which makes her perfectly suited to not only head our marketing efforts, but also contribute meaningfully to our internal team. Our team prides itself on versatility and collaboration, and to that end she fits perfectly into our culture.”

In addition to her professional achievements, Capps is also an accomplished artist who specializes in painting while also experimenting with other mediums, including 3D modeling and rendering. She notes that being born with synesthesia — an overlapping of multiple senses — has fueled her interests in arts, architecture, and architectural design.

Her works have been featured in galleries on the East Coast, as well as London and Prague, and in publications such as “House & Garden,” “WIRED,” “British Vogue,” and “British GQ.” Her art can be seen at www.scapps.art and www.shepaintsmusic.com.
